Legacy Track of the Week: Freddie Gibbs, Madlib ft Yasiin Bey & Black Thought - Education

“A dead-end street with a lemonade stand/ where is the sky in upside down land? That question is hard if you can't see the stars/ I’m really not sure, ask me tomorrow” Honestly Mos Def has the best verse on a track with Black Thought on it, and that’s a fun fact that will go down in the hip-hop hall of fame.

Chris Brown - Indigo

“baby, open my third eye/ that's my baby, she woke/ she my little cheat code/ when I'm with her, we grow/ I found my light…” The title track of Chris Brown’s ninth studio album is a Scott Storch (and company) production that sets the tone for yet another 30+ record project to be added to his catalog. Yet similar to his previous album, Heartbreak on a Full Moon, and the 2015 mixtape, Before the Party, there’s inevitably both hits and misses scattered throughout a blend of high-powered production, that when it hits is still one of the best feelings in R&B.

Chris Brown - Back to Love

“You open my heart, oh/ you got me back to love” CB laces the choreography over the Cam Wallace production in the streets of Paris, during the height of an alleged sex scandal in the country in true C Breezy fashion.

Chris Brown ft H.E.R. - Come Together

“And I want you, babe/ Ooh, and I can't lie” Using One Way’s 1984 “Don’t Stop” sample that was popularized years ago on Nelly’s “Luven Me” in 2000, famed producers Cardiak and Hitmaka come together to produce Chris Brown and H.E.R.’s second collaboration to date, one that’s nothing less than a certified heater.

Chris Brown ft Nicki Minaj & G-Eazy - Wobble Up

“Ayy, the way you bounce on it/ I might have to fuck around and spend a house on it” 🔥🔥🔥 a Summer in Miami record if I ever heard one.

Chris Brown ft Lil Wayne & Joyner Lucas - Need a Stack

“She said, ‘You gon' have to give me more than one dollar/ you gon' have to give me more than five dollars/ you gon' have to give me more than ten dollars/ you gon' have to throw more than twenty dollars” 🔥🔥🔥 the ultimate strip club anthem.

Chris Brown ft Drake - No Guidance

“Freaky (Freaky)/ I can learn a lot from you, gotta come teach me (Woo, woo)/ You a lil' hot girl, you a lil' sweetie (No, sweet)/ Sweet like Pearland, sweet like Peachtree (Like that)” Drizzy Drake laces the bridge on one of the best Top 40 radio records of the year.

Chris Brown - Undecided

“But I'm undecided, excited, ignited/ and I don't wanna feel the way I do, but I like it” 🔥🔥🔥 For all it’s nostalgia this Avedon and Scott Storch production is nothing but flames.

Freddie Gibbs, Madlib - Crime Pays

“Fly like the wind/ it's time to begin your life”, One of the best gifts that hip-hop lends itself to is the introduction to other genres of music, as is the case here with the sample provided by Walt Barr’s 1979 track “Free Spirits,” that is now heard and appreciated by a generation of new fans.

Freddie Gibbs, Madlib ft Anderson .Paak - Giannis

“Ice will come with the fame/ flowers cover the grave/ power, love, and loyalty/ wash me clean today” Freddie Gibbs and Madlib released their collaborative album, Bandana, and this track is one of the highlights thanks Anderson .Paaks vocals on the hook.

Freddie Gibbs, Madlib - Practice

“Yeah, yeah, my *****, I went T-Pain for her/ she 'bout to get off work at the club, I used to wait for her” Madlib samples Donny Hathaway’s “Make It Your Own” on one of the best Freddie Gibbs records to date.

Mustard, Migos - Pure Water

“Uh (Woo, woo), no Master P (Ayy)/ Ten bad bitches and they after me (Bad)/ One bad bitch look like a masterpiece (Uh)/ Lookin' for a dunk, like a athlete (Uh)” Mustard and Migos turn in one of the best Top 40 hip-hop records of the year.

Twista ft Do or Die & Scotty Music - Heaven

“Just a full time student and I can see that you can make the honor roll/ you da bomb but not from Lebanon like a leprechaun that went over the rainbow into a pot of gold” Twista still spittin 🔥🔥🔥 in 2019.

Twista ft Shan - Weekend

“I’ll be waiting/ for some weed, a bottle, and you” Sounds like a good weekend to me 🔥🔥

Twista - Tonite

“Baby tonight/ let me show you how it feels to touch the sky” The outro is one of the best records on Twista’s latest mixtape, Summer 96.

Lil Uzi Vert - Sanguine Paradise

“I was swingin' from a vine, tryna pull me down but I climb/ I'ma get it, keep tryin', there's no reason for the cryin'/ we the ones that be slidin', they the ones that be dyin'/ know my boys, they be ridin' and my doors suicide” A promo track off Uzi Vert’s sophomore album, Eternal Awake, this one is a vibe but was inevitably scrapped from the project.
